Mayawati criticises Congress over Kumari Selija ‘upset’ narration, saying she’remembers Dalits in tough times…’

Mayawati, the head of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), attacked the Congress and other caste-based political parties for their treatment of Dalit leaders. Using the current situation in Haryana as an example, the BSF head stated that the Congress party only remembers Dalits during difficult times, meaning that the party ignores their issues when in a position of power.

Mayawati tweeted on x

In a posting to X, the BSP chairman stated, “The political developments that have happened in the country so far prove that particular Congress and other caste-based individuals tend to remember the need to effect Dalits in important positions such as Chief Minister and the organisation leaders for some time during their difficult days.”

“However, these kinds of organisations of politicians generally sidelined them through their opportune days, replace them with caste-related people who hold positions of influence, as we are at present seeing in that region of the Indian state of Haryana, India,” she explained to the journal.

‘Dalit leaders should oppose casteist parties’

In a clear reference to Kumari Selja, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati asked Dalit leaders who are offended by their treatment to seek inspiration from Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s history and separate themselves from such parties. She stressed the necessity of striving for their community’s dignity and self-respect, recalling that Baba Saheb left from his position as National Law Minister to protect the dignity of underprivileged parts of society.

“Dalit politicians who are being criticised should draw encouragement from their saving grace, Baba Saheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and boycott such organisations. They should also take initiative to keep the neighbourhood away from these celebrations in the future. This is why the highly regarded Baba Saheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar quit as Union Law Minister to protect the self-worth and honour of the country’s weakest portions,” she remarked.

Mayawati expressed concerns about the Congress and other caste-based parties’ historical resistance to Dalit reservation territory, citing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks on the possibility of removing reservations. She warned the community to be wary of “anti-Constitution, anti-reservation, and anti-SC, ST, OBC sentiments” coming from such political organisations.

The Indian Congress and other caste-based groups have persistently opposed reservations. Rahul Gandhi even stated abroad that he intends to remove them. The community should surely be wary of such anti-constitutional, anti-reservation, and anti-SC, ST, and OBC groups,” she added.

Conflict in Haryana Congress

It is worth noting that there have been several allegations of infighting in Congress, with Kumari Selja’s camp accusing the other of stepmotherly behaviour. The disparities between veteran politician and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and the party’s significant Dalit figure, Kumari Selja, have become clear. With less than two weeks until the important votes, reports suggest that Selja is distancing herself from the campaign, increasing questions about her role and the party’s cohesiveness ahead of elections.

In Haryana the political process, Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Kumari Selja are considered as competitors.

Kumari Selja planned to run for Uklana, but the party denied her a ticket. The party was prepared to grant her nephew Harsh a ticket from Uklana, but the ruling Congress leader refused.

Former Chief Minister and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has urged Selija to join the BJP, despite claims that she is ‘upset’. Selja’s place in the Congress remains uncertain, since her lack of involvement raises concerns about her future with the party.

Khattar’s statements came in reaction to mounting worries over internal divisions within the Haryana Congress, specifically Selja’s absence from crucial events such as the party’s manifesto launch, which was headed by national president Mallikarjun Kharge.
