India beat Bangladesh by 280 runs, Ashwin and Jadeja heroes of victory

India : Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin & Ravindra Jadeja led India to a 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the 1 Test at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Today.

Day 4 of the latest Chennai Test started with India needing six wickets and Bangladesh needing 357 runs to win the first game of the two-match series.

Ashwin took six wickets for India in a 21-over session, conceding 88 runs. In his 5.1-over performance, Jadeja took three wickets, allowed 58 runs, and bowled two maidens. Jasprit Bumrah took one wicket, conceding only 24 runs and bowling two maiden overs in ten overs.

At the drinks break, Bangladesh were 194/4, with Najmul Hossain Shanto (64) and Shakib Al Hasan (25) unbroken at the crease.

After drinks, off-spinner Ravichandaran Ashwin made the first crack for the hosts, returning left-hand hitter Shakib Al Hasan to the pavilion. The southpaw was removed after scoring 25 runs.

Following the withdrawal of the left-hand batter, Litton Das, the team’s wicketkeeper, batted in the middle alongside skipper Shanto.

Bangladesh reached 200 runs in 53.5 overs as Shanto slammed a boundary off Ashwin.

Das returned to the dressing room in the next over, bowled by Jadeja, after scoring only one run in the 55th over, with the team total at 205 runs.

Bangladesh began to struggle after that, being bowled out for only 234 runs in the 62.1 overs they faced in their second inning.

Shanto produced a brilliant innings of 82 runs off 127 balls, including eight boundaries and three maximums.

Bangladesh finished day three on 158/4, with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (51) and Shakib Al Hasan (5) undefeated. Bangladesh began the post-Tea session at 56/0, with Shadman Islam (21) and Zakir Hasan (32) unbeaten at the crease.

India’s Jasprit Bumrah attacked early in the session, eliminating Zakir for 33 (47 balls). Ravichandran Ashwin took up the final three wickets, dismissing Shadman Islam (35), Mominul Haque (13), and Mushfiqur Rahim (13).

Ashwin was brought late on the fourth day, after the first hour, and removed Shakib in his first over on Sunday, after dismissing three batters the day before. The tap was opened following Shakib’s wicket, as Bangladesh lost six wickets for only 40 runs. Ashwin equalled Shane Warne with his 37th five-wicket haul, finishing with scores of 6/88, while Jadeja took three wickets.

However, Ashwin set the tone for the match, although with the bat in the first innings. At 144/6, India appeared to be in a difficult situation, with Bangladesh’s pacers on fire. However, the two Ravis – Indran and Chandran – Ashwin and Jadeja put up a mammoth 199-run stand to spearhead India’s comeback.

The second session of Day Three of the Chennai Test began with India at 205/3, with Rishabh Pant (82) and Shubman Gill (86) standing at the crease. India currently has a 432-run advantage.

Gill had an undefeated knock of 119 runs from 176 balls, including 10 boundaries and four maximums.

Middle-order the batter KL Rahul also delivered an important effort of unbeaten 22 runs in 19 balls, including four boundaries.India declared their innings when they had scored 287 runs for the cost of four wickets. They set the opponent a target of 515 runs to win the series’ first match.

Brief Score: India 376 and 287/4 d (Shubman Gill 119*, Rishabh Pant 109, Nahid Rana 1/21) leads Bangladesh 149 and 234 all out (Najmul Hossain Shanto 82, Zakir Hasan 32, Ravichandran Ashwin 6/88).

India has grabbed a 1-0 lead in the series and maintained their position at the top of the WTC rankings with a PCT of 71.67. Bangladesh, on the other hand, is currently in a must-win position following a crushing setback in order to advance to the WTC final.
